Righteousness is a standard of purity and holiness.
God Himself sets the standard, which is perfection.
The Righteousness of God was manifested on the Cross-when the Only
Righteous One suffered and died for all of humanity. “For
in the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is
written, ‘BUT THE RIGHTEOUS man SHALL LIVE BY FAITH.’” Romans 1:17
(NASB Update) ·
Romans
1:18-32 has antandra or double meaning: I believe it refers to 1) the Gentile sinners 2) the overall
status of mankind. ·
What do you picture when you think of the “wrath of God”? ·
What is the “wrath of God”? The personal manifestation of God's
holy, moral character in judgment against sin. Wrath is neither an
impersonal process nor is it irrational and fitful like anger. It is in no
way vindictive or malicious. It is holy indignation-God's anger directed
against sin. God's
wrath is an expression of His holy love. If God is not a God of wrath, His
love is no more than frail, worthless sentimentality; the concept of mercy
is meaningless; and the Cross was a cruel and unnecessary experience for His
Son. “For the wrath of God is
revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who
suppress the truth in unrighteousness, because
that which is known about God is evident within them; for God made it evident to
them. For
since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and
divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has
been made, so that they are without excuse.” Romans 1:18-20
(NASB Update) ·
What does it mean, God made it evident within them?
Can you name some ways that God has made Himself evident to us? Two ways they knew God: 1)
Conscience—“because that which is known about
God is evident within them”[1]
Ecclesiastes 3:11 states, “He has made everything beautiful in its
time. He has also set eternity in the hearts of men; yet they cannot fathom what
God has done from beginning to end.” [2] 2)
Nature—“The heavens declare the glory of God;
the skies proclaim the work of his hands. Day after day they pour forth speech;
night after night they display knowledge. There is no speech or language where
their voice is not heard. Their
voice goes out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world."
Psalm 19:1-4 (NIV) “For even though they
knew God, they did not honor Him as God or give thanks, but they became
futile in their speculations, and their foolish heart was darkened.” Romans 1:21
(NASB Update) Read Psalm 14:1—“The fool has said in his heart
that there is no God” Where has he said it? With what has he said that there is no God? “Professing to be
wise, they became fools, and exchanged the glory of the incorruptible God
for an image in the form of corruptible man and of birds and four-footed
animals and crawling creatures.” Romans 1:22, 23
(NASB Update)
“Therefore God gave them
over in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, so that their bodies would be
dishonored among them.” Romans 1:24
(NASB Update) ·
Why would God give someone into sin? “For they exchanged the
truth of God for a lie,
and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is
blessed forever. Amen.” Romans 1:25
(NASB Update) ·
Can you name examples of how people still worship creation
over creator? “He feeds on
ashes, a deluded heart misleads him; he cannot save himself, or say, ‘Is
not this thing in my right hand a lie?’”[4] “For this reason God gave
them over to degrading passions; for their women exchanged the natural
function for that which is unnatural, and in the same way also the men
abandoned the natural function of the woman and burned in their desire
toward one another, men with men committing indecent acts and receiving in
their own persons the due penalty of their error.” Romans 1:26, 27
(NASB Update) ·
Why would God give them over? ·
Is God giving up on them? “And just as they did not
see fit to acknowledge God any longer, God gave them over to a depraved mind, to do those things which
are not proper, being filled with all unrighteousness, wickedness, greed,
evil; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, malice; they are gossips,
slanderers, haters of God, insolent, arrogant, boastful, inventors of evil,
disobedient to parents, without understanding, untrustworthy, unloving,
unmerciful; and although they know the ordinance of God, that those who
practice such things are worthy of death, they not only do the same, but
also give hearty approval to those who practice them.” Romans 1:28-32
(NASB Update) Depravity: an state of eternal evil. Jeremiah
17:9 (NASB Update) ·
Depravity is part of God’s wrath, but can also be an example
of God’s grace! [1] Romans 1:19 (NASB Update) [2] New International Version [3] Psalm 19:1-4 (NIV) [4] Isaiah 44:20 (NIV)
