God's Game Plan...
Romans 9-11

Israel In God’s Pl an

Romans 9

God’s Special People

Who God Chose (v. 1-13)

…the people of Israel. Theirs is the adoption as sons; theirs the divine glory, the covenants, the receiving of the law, the temple worship and the promises. Theirs are the patriarchs, and from them is traced the human ancestry of Christ, who is God over all, forever praised! Amen.

Romans 9:4-5 (NIV)

·        God elected, or chose Israel as a special nation for His glory.

·        God’s choice, or election, is national and not individual—meaning God chose the nation as whole, not select individuals.[1]

·        Just because you were Jewish by birth, it didn’t make you a “true Israelite,” with all of God’s promises of salvation (v. 6).  An obedience that leads to faith in response is a condition for that.

·        The Jewish people were blessed with God’s Law, seeing God’s glory, and ultimately the Messiah (v. 5) was born from them.

Why God Chose Israel (v. 14-33)

·        God made the Sovereign choice; because He is sovereign.

·        Through Israel, God could bless the whole world.  The Gentiles could come to Him through His activity with the Jewish people.  Remember, they were appointed as a “Light To The Nations”!  (Romans 2:19)

Romans 10

Israel’s Rejection

Where They Went Wrong

For I testify about them that they have zeal for God, but not in accordance with knowledge. For not knowing about God's righteousness and seeking to establish their own, they did not subject themselves to the righteousness of God. For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes.

Romans 10:2-4 (NASB Update, emphasis added)

·        God didn’t break His covenant with the Jews, they broke their covenant with Him.  (see 04, The Frailty of Religion)

·        The Jews desired righteousness, but they desired to hold to their traditions and make the attempt to save themselves through following the law—not through Jesus.

·        Jesus is the fulfillment of that law, pointing to even the Jews how desperately they need Him.

How To Be Saved

That if you confess with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved. As the Scripture says, ‘Anyone who trusts in him will never be put to shame.’   For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile-the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him, for, ‘Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.’

Romans 10:9-13 (NIV, emphasis added)

Romans 11

Hope For Israel

God Still Loves The Jewish People (v. 1-10)

·        Paul states that he is proof that God will still save Jews.  (v.1-2)

·        The Jews, as prophesied, rejected Jesus—expecting an earthly king instead of a suffering servant (Isaiah 52-53).

We Are Called To Minister To The Jews (v. 11-24)

I am talking to you Gentiles. Inasmuch as I am the apostle to the Gentiles, I make much of my ministry in the hope that I may somehow arouse my own people to envy and save some of them.

Romans 11:13-14 (NIV)

·        The Gentiles, by God’s grace, were drawn to Him.  The Jews were a light to the Gentile nations before, and now the Gentiles were to be a light to the Jews.

·        We are “ingrafted” into God’s family tree.

God’s Covenant With Israel With Still Be Fulfilled!  (v.25-36)

·        One day the remnant of Israel will be saved!

·        Many point out that the final remnant of Israel will be saved during the Great Tribulation period.

·        Paul ends the chapter in song, celebrating what God will do for Israel.  (v. 33-36)
